ProComm 2017 Student Poster Competition
PCS brings together engineers, educators, students, consultants, and researchers interested broadly in the role that communication plays in shaping engineering practice, research, and education. Those who attend our annual ProComm conference will find a welcoming organization of friendly people who care about engineering communication from a variety of perspectives. Attendees have opportunities to network, learn about best practices, share their own knowledge, and engage in hands-on workshops related to technical communication.
All undergraduate and graduate students who graduated no later than September 1, 2016 are welcome to submit work for consideration.
Our 2017 poster competition invites submissions from students in engineering, technical and professional communication, design, education, and all other perspectives that contribute to our understanding of communication.
Potential poster topics include but are not limited to:
- Communication insights gained during a service-learning, study abroad, or site visit experience.
- Perspectives on engineering and technical communication from underrepresented minorities.
- A study of how new technologies have shaped communication in the disciplines.
- A novel teaching case or assignment developed to improve communication skills.
- Perspectives on best practices in engineering and technical communication derived from writing centers or peer tutoring practices.
- Strategies learned from communicating technical ideas concepts to public audiences.
- Lessons learned from cross-cultural or multilingual technical communication.
- A literature review of a trend in professional, technical, or engineering communication.
- A usability or user experience report.
- A first-hand experience report on participation in an activity or workplace case that highlights the importance of oral, written, team-based, or visual communication in the discipline.
- Original research done in pursuit of a dissertation or thesis.
Timeline for Participants (closed)
- March 31: Those accepted to the poster session will have summaries of their posters formally published in the form of extended abstracts to the IEEE XPlore website. Submit a no more than 700-word extended abstract, following IEEE guidelines for extended abstracts. Extended abstracts will be double-blind reviewed and will determine admission to the poster session.
- April 15. You will receive notification about acceptance to the poster session, along with poster guidelines and reviewer comments on your extended abstract.
- May 1. Submit a copy of your final, camera-ready extended abstract (to be published in IEEE XPlore).
- At least one participant from each poster must register for the conference by Insert Date for the extended abstract to be published.
FAQ
Can I present work I’ve done in collaboration with a faculty member/practitioner/non-student?
The ProComm poster session highlights student work, and, therefore, only eligible students may author a poster. However, you may acknowledge others who have guided or helped you with your project in the Acknowledgements section of your extended abstract and poster.
Can I present work I’ve done with another student?
Yes, as long as your fellow student collaborators also meet the eligibility requirements.
Do I have to attend the ProComm 2017 conference to present the poster?
Yes, at least one poster author must be present during the poster session.
How do I submit my work for consideration?
You will submit an extended abstract that describes the project or research you will present at the poster session. This extended abstract should be no longer than 700 words, and, if your work is accepted to the conference, this extended abstract will be published in IEEE’s archived repository, Xplore. Abstracts will be double blinded for review by no fewer than two reviewers.
When will I find out if my poster has been accepted to the conference?
You will be notified no later than April 15, 2017 about the acceptance of your extended abstract and poster to the conference. At that time, you will be notified about the dimensions of the poster and what will be provided for you at the conference.
