The Engineering Communications Program (ECP), in the College of Engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY invites applications for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position. This non-tenure track position, teaching engineering communications, is a nine-month position, appointed three to five years, with possible renewal.
The successful candidate will teach one section of either of the program’s core courses, ENGRC 3500: Engineering Communications or ENGRC Organizational Communications for Engineers. In addition, they will join existing and/or create new “teaching partnerships” with faculty from a range of courses in the various engineering disciplines. Through these teaching partnerships, ECP staff help interested faculty embed written, oral, visual and electronic communications into their courses and assist in instruction, e.g., designing assignments and responding to and assessing student work. The teaching commitment is comparable to a 2/2 load. There is an expectation that this person will also contribute to developing and enhancing the aim of ECP through, for example, professional presentation and/or publication or conducting workshops for industry representatives and/or interested faculty and students in the College of Engineering and, more broadly, Cornell University. Finally, there is an added expectation of light administrative duties.
Candidates must hold at least an MA, preferably a PhD in Technical and Professional Communications or in Applied Linguistics with a specialization in Professional and Academic Discourse or Engineers with special expertise in Professional Communication. Additional preferred areas of expertise are TESL. ESP, EAP, Genre Studies and Multimodal Communication. Experience teaching engineering communications at the college level is important. Applicants with inter-disciplinary teaching experience (especially in engineering) and experience identifying and serving the instructional needs of faculty in various technical fields are highly desirable.
The position and program are a good fit for teacher-scholars interested in cross-disciplinary instruction in engineering communications. ECP encourages teacher-research in this area, particularly as it contributes to the program and enhances communication instruction across engineering disciplines. Funds are available to support the presentation and/or publication of such teacher-research.
