Harold S. Renne, ProComm founder
Harold S. Renne (Bell Telephone). Renne authored Atomic Radiation Detection and Measurement (Howard W. Sams, 1955), co-credited with editors Lloyd J. Austin and Donald E. Herrington. The book covers the fundamental principles and techniques of detecting and measuring atomic radiation, split into a first part on the sources, properties, and interactions of atomic radiation, and a second part on detection instruments like gas-filled detectors, scintillation detectors, solid-state detectors, and nuclear spectroscopy, with applications in radiation protection, medical imaging, and nuclear power. He’s also listed as author of related, shorter titles: How to Detect & Measure Radiation as well as Atomic Radiation Detection And Measurement.
Renne had a technical background in nuclear instrumentation/radiation detection, which wasn’t unusual for the era, since many early technical-communication pioneers were practicing engineers first who later turned their attention to the craft of engineering writing.
When PGEWS was begun, Renne helped to edit the Bell System Technical Journal, the in-house research journal published by AT&T/Bell Telephone Laboratories, published from 1922 into the 1980s (it later became the AT&T Technical Journal). It carried many landmark papers in electronics, telephony, and information theory.
