An Invitation to IEEE ProComm Young Professionals

Reshape ProComm’s 70-year History Documentation

The IEEE Professional Communication Society (ProComm) has been at the forefront of technical communication since its founding on March 19, 1957. For nearly seven decades, ProComm has advanced the standards of written, oral, and visual communication for engineers, educators, and technical professionals worldwide.

Now, we are ready to tell that story in a new way, and we want you to help us do it.

We are seeking motivated IEEE ProComm Young Professionals to join a volunteer contributor team tasked with reimagining the History section of the IEEE ProComm website. This is a unique opportunity to leave a lasting mark on your society while developing skills at the intersection of technical/engineering communication, archival research, web development, and emerging technology.

If you are an IEEE ProComm Young Professional who is ready to help us bring our history to life, we want to hear from you. Please complete the contributor interest form below to be considered for the team. This ad-hoc dev team will consist of 2-4 YP members, led by the IEEE ProComm VP for Content, Dr. Traci Nathans-Kelly.

No monetary compensation is associated with this volunteer opportunity. However, upon the completion of strong work, the VP of Content for IEEE ProComm can write a letter of support/review for your work.

Project Parameters and Goals

The current ProComm History page offers a foundational narrative of our society’s origins and growth. Our goal is to transform it into something far more dynamic: a richly documented, interactive historical archive that reflects the full depth of ProComm’s contributions to the field.

Contributors will help us move from a static written summary to an immersive, accessible digital experience — one that future members, researchers, and the broader professional communication community can explore and build upon.

Expectations for Contributors

Selected contributors will work collaboratively to

  • work from ProComm’s historical moments gathered from primary sources, including archived IEEE PCS newsletters, the ProComm website, articles published in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, and other sources
  • research and document significant milestones, people, conferences, publications, and initiatives across ProComm’s history
  • draft and edit content for the revised History section, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with ProComm’s voice and mission
  • contribute to the design and development of an interactive web experience, including structured content, timelines, or other engaging formats
  • ensure accessibility compliance across all contributed content and features, in accordance with current web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG)
  • explore and potentially implement AI or AI-assisted tools to support content creation, organization, or archival workflows where appropriate
  • document backend and processes for future contributors and editors
  • meet regularly via video (such as Zoom) with the VP of Content and other members of the team

This call is open to IEEE ProComm Young Professionals, our early-career members who bring fresh perspectives and a passion for both communication and technology.

Strong candidates will have familiarity with some or all of the following:

  • Strong writing skills in American English
  • Creative perspectives about online interactive formats
  • A desire to potentially create a research project or article out of this experience
  • Computer Science or related technical background
  • HTML and web development fundamentals
  • WordPress (content editing, page building, or theme/plugin familiarity)
  • Web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.x or similar frameworks)
  • AI tools or AI agents for content generation, curation, or automation (a plus, not a requirement)
  • Archival research or digital humanities experience is welcome but not required

Above all, we are looking for contributors who are detail-oriented, collaborative, and genuinely excited about preserving and communicating the history of a society that has shaped how engineers and technical professionals communicate.
