Z. Guo, J. D’Ambra, T. Turner, and H. Zhang. “Improving the effectiveness of virtual teams: A comparison of video-conferencing and face-to-face communication in China,” IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, vol. 52, no. 1, pp.1-16, 2009.
Recommended by IEEE Professional Communication Society Administrative Council member Helen Grady. Here’s an excerpt from a letter she wrote recommending the article for an award:
“The paper’s authors clearly describe the key differences between traditional face-to-face meetings and virtual meetings conducted via video-conferencing, as well as how to help virtual teams build a shared model of effective communication in the absence of social context cues caused by [Computer Mediated Communication] CMC technologies.
The research methodology in this paper is well thought out and clearly explained. Data were collected from 120 participants and the results subjected to extensive statistical tests. Furthermore, the strengths and weaknesses of the findings and their implications are clearly evaluated. Finally, the paper itself is well-organized and extremely well written.”
The article received the 2009 Rudy Joenk Award for best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication.
